Marissa: Hi Lindsey! Thank you so much for chatting with us today. I know you guys just left the hospital so I really appreciate you taking the time to talk with us. Can you start by telling me a little bit about your children and family:
Lindsey: My husband Shaun and I have identical twin boys, Colton, and Jack. They just recently turned 18 months and keep us very busy. They are our first children and we are so blessed. Jack is a busy bee and is very curious. He is a happy boy almost always. Colty had a rough start and spent three months in the NICU. He has many medical challenges and is fed by a gtube (feeding tube in his stomach). He is our love bug and loves snuggles. He watches Jack’s every move and lights up every time Jack is in the room.
Marissa: Sounds like you’re a busy mama! So what does a day in the life look like for you?
Lindsey: I am a stay at home mama and love this tiring role. We have private duty nursing for Colty three days a week, which gives me a little respite and lets me spend quality time with Jack. On Mondays and Fridays I am with both boys and we love to play outside, listen to music, and I have to play Houdini and juggle different feeding schedules and naps. Colty has five different therapies a week: physical therapy, occupational therapy, music, massage, and vision, as well as many doctors appointments. Keeping track of all of those is a full time job in itself.
M: Way to go, mama. I really admire your strength and everything you juggle. The boys (Shaun included) are so lucky to have you! So what do you love, besides all of your boys?
L: I love to have moments by myself to feel like the “old” Lindsey. I enjoy working out, spending time with friends, and a good ole Starbucks.
M: Ahh, Starbucks. And what do the boys love?
L: They love their family; Mama, Dada, each other, and Oggie the doggie. They love books, music, and people.
M: Can you give me a little back story about your “Winging It” picture?
L: This picture shows the reality of our life. Colty had a brain injury in utero and the boys both have a mosaic duplication of chromosome 15. Jack is thriving and Colty has struggled a lot; he is our little angel and quite a fighter. After a three-month stay in the NICU, we had a few months of a break, but since last September we have had six inpatient hospital stays and countless ER trips. Colty has had five different pneumonias, all which have required hospital stays. The picture that I shared shows Colty in I on Monday in his hospital bed wearing oxygen. There is no manual to being a first time mama and especially with a medically fragile child. I do the best I can every day for my boys. I am working on being “good enough” through this journey.
M: If that doesn’t capture “winging it”, I’m not sure what does! What would you say is the biggest thing you have learned about yourself since becoming a mom?
L: I have learned so much in the past 18 months but the biggest thing I have learned is that the moment I became a mama I lost all control. Any plan I had of what I thought this journey would be like is the complete opposite. We have had our share of struggles but one thing I know for sure is that in this life all you need is to be loved and to give love in return.
M: What’s your favorite part about having twins?
L: I love watching the bond that they share, yet how different they are. We had a hard time conceiving and I feel like we were doubly blessed. The boys are our everything!
